CEDIA 2017 - what's new and cool
Our Takeaways from the Custom Electronics Annual Trade Show - Part One
The CEDIA Expo is the showcase for new product & service introductions in the home technology channel. Our role is to assess and evaluate offerings, old and new, to determine which ones we feel will most benefit you. To try and decide which will become essential, which will fall flat and which will blow you away! We dig deep and apply our experience to the process in order to separate novelty from true innovation. In our opinion, advancements were incremental this year, but larger trends are indeed emerging.
Mega-theme number one - That we are referring to as “Energy” came into focus, and promises to impact the residential technology market significantly, now and well into the future. As the shift from fossil fuels to renewables gains momentum, as the quality of power becomes more relevant, and as the quest for energy efficiency grows, the residential infrastructure takes on new relevance. This Expo, we were introduced to Dynamic Load Management from Savant and sister company RacePoint Energy. RacePoint Energy deserves an entire post – we now have a comprehensive end to end renewable solution, with lighting control, battery backup, dynamic load management and automation. We explored Rosewater Energy’s latest offering for whole house power management, a system that works on or off grid, and assures clean power as well as complete backup for your sensitive electronic devices. ). Our traditional power management & protection vendors, SurgeX, Panamax & Transient Protection Design all showed advanced offerings, most with remote monitoring and management options.
We experienced multiple LED illumination offerings with certain vendors opting for fully low voltage systems (ColorBeam and CoastalSource). Smart Lamps that are can be integrated and tuned for optimum health and well-being results, wide color spectrums and built in circadian rhythm generators (Savant & Ketra). Control systems are getting ahead of the unique challenges of controlling LED loads (Lutron Homeworks QS). We witnessed the increased importance of natural lighting control - automated, motorized window treatments - for energy management as well as aesthetics, convenience and comfort. (Savant, Crestron, Lutron QS). Automated and intuitive climate control is advancing rapidly and automated control over solar gain (and heat loss) is an exploding category. Savant & Elan showed new more powerful thermostats and related systems, as did many others.
